MIT researchers develop new display system with flying pixels -- Remote controlled “micro helicopter

By: Steven Samblis - 2/22/2010
Imagine that pixels could fly out of your computer screen and create an immersive, luminous cloud capable of displaying digital information in three-dimensional space. This is the vision beyond Flyfire, a new project put together by researchers at MIT’s SENSEable City Lab and Aerospace Robotics and Embedded Systems Laboratory (ARES Lab). Flyfire uses a large number of remotely controlled, self-organizing "micro helicopters". Each helicopter contains small LEDs and acts as a smart pixel. Through digitally controlled movements, the helicopters perform elaborate and synchronized choreographies, generating a unique free-form display in three-dimensional space.

SURROGATES-Round Table Q&A with Dr. James Canton, Futurist & Randall Alley, CEO of Biodesigns

By: Steven Samblis - 2/1/2010
Q: Randall, can you tell us what the first prosthetic limbs were like and compare it to the most advanced of today? Will the knowledge of these help the people who truly build the first surrogate robot? Randall Alley: The first prosthetic limbs were amazingly heavy and cumbersome. Some were even marvels of engineering in their day. This was in large part due to the materials available to the artisans of the day. What characterized them then and to a great extent even now was and is the lack of attention to biomechanics of the interface that attaches to the limb or body.

A CLOUD THAT TWEETS Proposed monument for London 2012 Olympics unveiled

By: IC Editorial Staff - 12/13/2009
A team of leading architects and engineers has just unveiled designs for The Cloud - a landmark structure to commemorate London’s role as host of the 2012 Olympics. The lightweight transparent tower, composed of a "cloud" of inflatable, light-emitting spheres, would create a spatial, three- dimensional display in the skies of London, fed by real time information from all over the world.

Journalists+Twitter= Jitters?

By: IC Editorial Staff - 12/3/2009
The inevitable has happened. The freedom of ’user-generated content’ is making the world of journalism squirm in its orbit. All that gung-ho on journalism and social media had to stop somewhere, right?! It all started when Raju Narisetti, a top Washington Post editor, tweeted his unfiltered thoughts on health care, term limits and deficits.
