You begin with a basic premise: that the human arm was not designed to throw overhand. Mother Nature must be a softball fan. Or maybe a bowler. Had she intended for men to fling objects from over the top at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour, she would have surely put the shoulder on a hinge that could be serviced with WD-40. She would have made the elbow of sterner stuff.

The National Basketball Association today released its 2010-11 schedule and announced the Orlando Magic will open its 22nd season on Thursday, October 28 at the new Amway Center on Thursday, October 28 against Washington. Tip-off is 8 p.m. and the game will be nationally televised by TNT.

It’s 100 degrees out in Orlando which means one thing. No, not emergency over-priced service calls from AC companies. It’s the NBA Summer League. There are 100 of the best sports journalists from around the world covering the event this week. With that in mind I’m not going to try to compete with them and out-pith their writings. What I would like to do is the same as I do with my movie reviews. Let me bring you my gut reaction to this amazing event.

As we move along into the second decade of this millennium, it should be apparent to all those not blinded or dazzled by the NBA’s bling that this is a horrible basketball league which will have trouble making it to the third decade in its current state. The NBA stinks, for the most part about as easy on the eyes and the nose as a backed-up septic tank.

Reggie Bush should keep the Heisman, but lose the pose. He should stop pretending that the truth is another clumsy tackler he can easily evade with an extended stiff-arm, that he was responsible for no wrongdoing during his take-the-money-and-run career at USC, and that he has cooperated with the NCAA investigation that has resulted in sweeping sanctions for his old school. He should get off his high (Trojan) horse, man up and show that he is something more than a slick opportunist with a complicit conscience. The tainted pride of Helix High should stop hiding behind legalistic generalities and try telling us what really happened.

In anticipation of the opening of the team’s new home, the Amway Center, the Orlando Magic have updated its primary logo. This new look ’turns the page’ on the next chapter in Orlando sports history. As the team and the Magic brand continue to grow, the logo evolves with a stronger, cleaner, more timeless design to match the team’s championship ideals.
