Aziz Ansari (Sorta) Went Back To School To Prep For 'Epic' Role

4 hours 12 min ago

The new 3-D computer animated film "Epic" tells the story of a battle between the (very small) forces of good and evil in nature, where the very life of a forest hangs in the balance. It features the voices of Amanda Seyfried, Jason Sudeikis, Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Christoph Waltz, Aziz Ansari, Chris O'Dowd, Beyonce Knowles, Steven Tyler and Pitbull.

In the movie, Ansari plays a cocky slug named Mub; O'Dowd is his brave snail sidekick, Grub. Together they form a comedy team in the grand tradition of animated duos like Timon and Pumbaa, Buzz and Woody, and Shrek and Donkey.

Though he brings a lot of funny to "Epic," Ansari described his serious (and very made-up) preparation for the role. "Pitbull and I took a few classes at a nearby university to learn as much as we could about the insect world," he told MTV News. "We learned quite a bit."

O'Dowd was slightly less academic with his own "research" —"I just watched telly," he said.

"Epic" is in theaters now.

'Fast & Furious 7' Is 'A Reset,' Vin Diesel Says

5 hours 14 min ago

Today "Fast & Furious 6" hits theaters. Meanwhile, "Fast & Furious 7" already has a release date. So is it safe to assume that more movies are in the works in the "Fast & Furious" franchise? It's not much of a stretch, if Vin Diesel is to be believed.

"I don't want to go too far ahead. I found myself talking about '8' yesterday and I had to stop myself," Diesel told MTV News, adding, "I will say that '7' is a reset."

Paul Walker piped up, "His ability to manifest stuff is like nobody else in the business, I'm going to tell you, and I've been a part of that for 10 plus years. Who is this guy, Nostradamus? It's pretty impressive, that's for sure."

It sounds like the greater plan is for a third trilogy to continue the storyline of "Fast & Furious 7," which is due in theaters on July 11, 2014. Diesel said that looking at the series in sets of three has helped them better develop its story.

"We realized when we came back to the franchise [in '2 Fast 2 Furious'] that it would be a cool thing if we could connect all our movies; if all of our movies felt like a continuous ride. So if you look at '4,' '5' and '6,' even, you'll see a continuous ride throughout where the films are speaking to each other," he said. "That wasn't the traditional way that Hollywood was making sequels at the time, as you know. A sequel was just another version of the same movie. What we were doing was continuing the story, so when you go to see 'Fast and Furious,' you're expecting bookends, you're expecting to pick up a little bit where you left off, and I think all of us collectively have done a great job of keeping the audience completely in the know."

Whatever does end up happening, expect the central cast of characters to return for it. "At the core, our saga is about family, which I feel separates us from other action films," Diesel said. "I don't see any movie, especially a movie of this size and of this nature and of this kind of action content, that puts such an emphasis on family, but ours is organic. Jordana [Brewster]'s been my sister, so to speak, for 14 years. We were all coming into this movie fresh and we were brothers and sisters from 1999. For better or for worse, that's what we are."

Ken Jeong Explains Why 'The Hangover 3' Needs Naked Chow

7 hours 14 min ago

It's not a spoiler to say that there is going to be a good deal of naked Ken Jeong in "The Hangover: Part III." Leslie Chow is back and crazier than ever in the new film, and Jeong believes that being naked is a necessary part of his character's personality.

"He's entering the world in this kind pantheon of chaos in a certain way," Jeong explained to MTV News. "When I think of a 'Hangover' movie, I think of 'loving chaos.' Like Chow loves chaos, and he enters the world loving chaos -- you know, of the 'Hangover' movies -- and then he finishes the trilogy with he still wants to show everyone that he still loves chaos. That to me is a bigger kind of message that I got from that, which I love."

For Jeong, the nudity is just part of the fun of acting in these films. While he as a person isn't a fan of stripping down in front of strangers, Jeong actually was the person who originally suggested the idea of a naked Chow to director Todd Phillips.

"You don't. It was my idea. I don't know if you know, but it was my idea to pop out naked in the trunk in the first movie. When I read the script, Chow had clothes on, and I was thinking to myself, 'Chow has to be naked.' This is screaming for Chow to jump out naked. To me, it was screaming for that, and I actually asked Todd Phillips, 'Do you think I could do it naked?' and he said, 'You don't have to ask me twice.'

Jeong has played a number of memorable characters during his career, including "Community's" Señor Chang and "Knocked Up's" Dr. Kuni. Still, according to him, Chow is "the best character I've ever played."

"He's like Lucifer," Jeong explained. "He's like the devil, basically, because the Wolf Pack's got to do a deal with the devil to get Doug back in the first one and then Chow keeps popping in and out of the movies. And now you really get to see Chow really standing in the way of the Wolf Pack gaining their maturity and moving on with their lives. Just when you think the devil is done, think again."

'World War Z' Will Feature Muse, Band To Perform At Premiere

7 hours 31 min ago

"World War Z" is going to be getting a healthy dose of the Grammy-winning band Muse. Not only will two of the band's songs be featured in the film, but Muse will also perform at the movie's upcoming London premiere.

Paramount Pictures has revealed that two tracks from Muse's album "The 2nd Law," which debuted in 2012, will be featured in the movie. Muse has been featured prominently in a film before, as the band also had a big presence in "Twilight" back in 2008.

As part of their collaboration with "World War Z," Muse will also be performing after the London premiere of the film on June 2. Tickets for the live event will go on sale on May 28 at 9 a.m. BST. The concert will take place at Horse Guards Parade Ground at St. James's Park.

This isn't the first time the folks behind "World War Z" have tried to include fans in the movie's promotion. Star Brad Pitt recently surprised viewers with an early screening of "World War Z" in New Jersey because it was a location featured in the film.

"I said OK but we can't do it without showing it to the people we made the film for," Pitt said. "We got to do a screening for the fans, so we decided there's no better place to do that than Jersey."

Brad Pitt Surprises Fans With Early 'World War Z' Screening

FROM MTV GEEK

Brad Pitt surprised fans in Hoboken, New Jersey two nights ago with a screening of his epic zombie flick, "World War Z." The actor wanted to throw a screening for the people that he made the movie for in the first place, so he decided to bring the film to New Jersey, one of the locations featured in "World War Z."

"I said OK but we can't do it without showing it to the people we made the film for," Pitt said. "We got to do a screening for the fans, so we decided there's no better place to do that than Jersey."

LEGO Made A Full Scale X-Wing!

Thu, 05/23/2013 - 23:18

FROM MTV GEEK

There are only a handful of ways to experience the world of "Star Wars" for yourself, but most of them are pretty lame. You could buy a replica lightsaber, but it won't actually work. You could go to Disney World, but that Darth Vader is someone's nephew and will probably break into dance before long.

But for the 30th anniversary of the folks over at LEGO gave MTV Geek a chance to get close to an X-Wing that's as big of as the real thing... but you know, made out of LEGOs.

Fun fact: The entire thing took more than 5.3 million individual bricks to build and weighs (internal steel skeleton included) 46,000 pounds.

Elijah Wood's First-Person 'Maniac' Gets A Creepy New Trailer

Thu, 05/23/2013 - 23:00

With the release Elijah Wood's first-person horror film "Maniac" only a month away, a new trailer for the project has premiered. It sets the mood of the story without giving too much of the plot away, and teases the type of scares the movie will deliver.

"Maniac" follows Wood as the "withdrawn owner of a mannequin store" whose urge to kill increases when he meets a young artist named Anna, played by Nora Arnezeder. The remake of the 1980 film of the same name already premiered at Cannes in 2012 and made the rounds in Europe earlier this year. It's earned generally positive reviews, and will be given a limited release in the US on June 21 and will also be released via VOD.

When MTV News caught up with Wood at the Sundance Film Festival, he teased how the first person perspective of the movie will work. "You only ever see me in reflections and occasionally there are out-of-body experiences where you see more of me," he said.

As for the fact it's a remake, Wood explained, "I normally don't love the notion of remakes. I've said that I'm averse to it, especially in horror films. But the approach was so different and so unique that I was really intrigued. It was fun."

Ewok Infographic: Learn All About The Creatures For 'Return Of The Jedi' Anniversary

Thu, 05/23/2013 - 22:00

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of "Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi" (May 25th), we are celebrating all things Ewok. For those readers new to the "Star Wars" universe, the Ewoks are tiny tree-dwelling creatures who assist in the film's climactic battle between the good guys (the Rebel Alliance) and bad guys (the Empire) — on the good side, of course.

As a part of our celebration, the folks at Next Movie put together a handy infographic that can function as your quick guide to Ewoks.

Check it out after the jump!

The most prominent Ewok in "Jedi" is Wicket W. Warrick, played by a then-eleven-year-old Warwick Davis. Davis, who has also appeared in the "Harry Potter" films as Griphook and Professor Flitwick, worked with "Star Wars" creator George Lucas again on the 1988 film "Willow" and spoke with MTV News earlier this year, before the Blu-ray release of that film.

"[Lucas] has always been really good to me as far as my career goes," Davis said. "I mean he gave me my big break in 1981 – I wouldn't have a career, I wouldn'’t be talking to you, if it hadn't been for him."

This summer, Davis will host Star Wars Celebration Europe in Essen, Germany. "These events are huge," said the actor. "Never underestimate the power of the Force."

Seven Things You Didn't Know About Dwayne Johnson

Thu, 05/23/2013 - 20:56

By Tara Fowler

This weekend sees the sixth (sixth!) installment of the "Fast & Furious" franchise hit theaters (and it's not the last — a seventh is set for next summer). The action series received a blast of adrenaline in the form of Dwayne Johnson with 2011's "Fast Five," and "Fast & Furious 6" promises to be just as, well, fast and furious thanks to the big guy's return (and that's saying something, since there are quite a few "big guys" — sorry Vin Diesel!). Here are seven things you may or may not have known about Johnson and his 18-inch biceps below:

1) He has a degree in criminology: And a criminal record. In fact, Johnson elected to get a degree in the field partly due to his shady past. "I struggled to stay on the right path," he told the Examiner. "I had multiple arrests by the time that I was 17. The last time I was arrested, my parents came down to the police station to get me. My parents were struggling at that time, even to put food on the table. That was a lot of stress at that time and I was adding to it. "

2) He made his acting debut on "That '70s Show": Though "The Mummy Returns" was Johnson's entrance onto the big screen, he previously played Rocky Johnson (that is, his own father) on a 1999 episode of "That '70s Show" and also appeared on an episode of "Star Trek: Voyager" as "The Champion."

3) He became a pro wrestler only after he was rejected by the Canadian Football League: Johnson was actually a stellar football player in high school, earning a scholarship to the University of Miami, only to be sidelined by a shoulder injury. After playing a short while in the CFL, he was cut from the team and decided to follow in his father's footsteps and become a wrestler.

4) He still holds the rights to his nickname, "The Rock," but prefers to be called by his real name now that he's an actor: "I no longer am a wrestler," he told Entertainment Magazine in 2006. "I am now pursuing a future as an actor and someday as a director. I am not The Rock. I am Dwayne Johnson."

5) He holds a Guinness World Record: Thanks to "The Scorpion King." Johnson was paid $5.5 million to appear in the film, the most any actor has ever received in their first starring role.

6) His grandfather was a Bond villain: And Johnson hopes to play one someday as well. Peter Fanene Maivia appeared as a ne'er-do-well car driver in "You Only Live Twice." Here's hoping Johnson gets a more high-profile role. YOLO!

Will you check out Fast & Furious 6 this weekend?

'Return Of The Jedi' 1981 Story Conference Teases Prequel Storylines, Suggests Yoda Shouldn't Fight

Wed, 05/22/2013 - 23:22

A new book, "The Making of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" by J.W. Rinzler, is hitting shelves just in time for the 30th anniversary of "Episode VI," and in the lead-up to the book's release, the Huffington Post has posted a fascinating excerpt.

The passage comes from a transcript taken from a 1981 story meeting held by George Lucas, Lawrence Kasdan, director Richard Marquand and producer Howard Kazanjian. During the conversation, Lucas fills in the backstory of Darth Vader in order to help the rest of the team craft an appropriate ending for the fallen Jedi.

What's so interesting about the conversation is how closely it matches the story from the prequel films, decades before they reached theaters, and how Lucas' explanation differs in other respect. For example, Lucas breaks down the relationship between the Emperor and Vader, essentially beat-for-beat from the prequels, but he explains how Yoda is more of a guru and a teacher and less of a full fledged Jedi knight, who is not ever supposed to fight.

This little factoid about non-fighting Yoda catches Kasdan completely off-guard, and you might be just as surprised to see that back in 1981, George Lucas hadn't besmirched the sanctity of the Force by basing its potency within a person on a midi-chlorian count. The "Star Wars" creator compares the Force to yoga, saying that anyone can tap into its power if they take the time to practice, like the Jedi. And to think, we were that close to never hearing about midi-chlorians.

Head over to the Huffington Post to check out the transcript from the "Return of the Jedi" story meeting.

Ryan Gosling's 'Only God Forgives' Earns Boos And Cheers At Cannes

Wed, 05/22/2013 - 22:00

The last time Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn went to Cannes together, they brought "Drive," the movie that won the director's prize at the festival and found a avid fan base in the states—and one person who was expecting a "Fast and Furious" rip-off.

They returned this year with the similarly stylish and violent "Only God Forgives." The trailers and clips have had "Drive" fans eager to see what would come next from the star and director duo, but the early reviews out of Cannes aren't as kind as they were for their last effort. While, "Only God Forgives" certainly has its fans, this may not be the movie that "Drive" fans were hoping for.

Read what the critics are saying after the jump!

"While many will surely argue that this is all at the expense of story, there is enough of one here to keep things moving, even if barely, and Kristin Scott Thomas is everything she's advertised to be. Get ready, the most badass art film ever is coming your way." —Ryland Aldrich, Twitch

"The wallpaper emotes more than Ryan Gosling does in 'Only God Forgives,' an exercise in supreme style and minimal substance from “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn.... As hyper-aggressive revenge fantasies go, it’s curious to see one so devoid of feeling, a veniality even 'Drive' fans likely won’t be inclined to forgive." —Peter Debruge, Variety

"A mesmerisingly moody and stylishly violent crime drama, Nicolas Winding Refn's film fairly drips with tangible menace and a pervading sense of dread, and while perhaps too bloody to attract substantial mainstream audiences (or young fans of star Ryan Gosling) its sheer sense of cinematic control, gripping sound design and its artistic look will find willing viewers who buy into its sheer elegance and razor-edge drama." —Mark Adams, Screen Daily

"The skeletal narrative mixes martial arts action with sexually loaded mother-son conflict that makes superficial nods to Shakespeare and Greek tragedy. Even more than the Danish director's previous film, this one has way more style than subtext, not that it’s likely to diminish its cultish allure for avid genre fans." —David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

em>"If one wants to root around for depth it is there, I suppose. Gosling, the Son, is a redeemer through his shred of dignity. But Chang, ruthless and all powerful, is perhaps on the side of right. But just as only God may forgive, only stoners who are blown away by gruesome violence and Cliff Martinez scores will have any interest in parsing this tale. The rest won't be quite so forgiving." —Jordan Hoffman, Film.com

"Only God Forgives" hits theaters and VOD on July 19.

'Pacific Rim' Featurette Explains What Makes Monster Beat-Downs Possible

Wed, 05/22/2013 - 21:00

The unfortunate souls that didn't make it into Hall H for the big unveiling of Guillermo del Toro's monsters-versus-robots battle royale, "Pacific Rim," missed out on an explanation of a key detail that is sure to give the movie a lot of its emotional heft.

Trailers for "Pacific Rim" show two suited pilots at the controls of the skyscraper-tall jaegers that battle the invading kaiju, which caused some people to ask why there needed to be more than one and even some accusations of cheap plot devices. In reality, the two-person team exists because of the enormity of the machine they're controlling.

As a new featurette (via IGN) explains, the neural bridge made to pilot the jaeger reveals the entire content of one person's brain to the other, in order to completely synchronize the two. We see in some footage that early experiments with one pilot ended badly, thus the two-pilot system was born.

"Pacific Rim" opens in theaters on July 12.

'The World's End' Trailer: See How The 'Shaun Of The Dead'-'Hot Fuzz' Trilogy Ends

Wed, 05/22/2013 - 19:52

The first US trailer for Edgar Wright's "The World's End" fills us in a little more on what to expect from the final installment in the Three Flavour Cornetto Trilogy, which also included "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz." And that is robots, apparently.

The new preview (via Yahoo! Movies) plays out like the several we've seen from the UK. A group of friends reunite after years apart to complete the 12-bar pub crawl that they couldn't finish in their younger years. The group is led by a greasy-looking Simon Pegg, and includes Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, and Eddy Marsan.

The biggest revelation from this new trailer is that it's robots that have taken over the gang's hometown. Earlier trailers have shown the invaders with light pouring from their eyes and mouths, but what at first looked like aliens are identified as robots in the US trailer.

'Halo' Television Series: Microsoft Announces Steven Spielberg-Produced Project

Tue, 05/21/2013 - 23:45

The entire gaming community was anticipating today's big announcement from Microsoft, which unveiled its new Xbox One gaming console, but the project that has everyone talking was one that no one saw coming.

As a part of their big presentation, Microsoft announced a "Halo" television series that will be produced by Steven Spielberg. The sci-fi action franchise has seemed poised for live-action adaptation since it first hit shelves in 2001, but this is the first time fans will get to see the Spartans outside of a few well-produced ads.

Learn more after the jump!

There's no word on how this series will be brought to your screen. One of the biggest aspects of the Xbox One that Microsoft touted during its hour-long press conference today was the easy of switching between gaming and live television with the use of your voice and Kinnect.

It's possible that Xbox One will offer original video content similar to Netflix, meaning that you would have to be an Xbox Live subscriber in order to watch the "Halo" television series.

The series is being described a "premium" programming, which essentially means that they're going to spend some money making. This isn't exactly surprising to anyone familiar with the games, since the action takes place on other worlds and includes battle against alien species.

This is the second highest profile "Halo" project to date. The first, Peter Jackson's feature film that would have been directed by future "District 9" helmer Neill Blomkamp, failed to get off the ground due to studio turmoil.

How Will 'Nymphomaniac' Make Explicit Shia LaBeouf Sex Scene Safe For Theaters?

Tue, 05/21/2013 - 22:30

Lars von Trier had his actors get down and dirty in his new sexually charged movie "Nymphomaniac." Fans can expect to see the film's stars like Shia LaBeouf, Uma Thurman and Stellan Skarsgard take part in graphic sex scenes with one another when the film finally hits theaters.

Except they won't actually be having sex, as it turns out. The Hollywood Reporter learned from the film's producer, Louise Vesth, that von Trier actually shot two separate versions of the sex scenes: one featuring the actors, and the other featuring body doubles actually having sex. The director now plans to "use digital technology to combine the actors' non-explicit displays with the pornographic performance of the doubles," THR reports.

"We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles, who really did have sex, and in post we will digital-impose the two," Vesth said. "So above the waist it will be the star and the below the waist it will be the doubles."

This is the reason why "Nymphomaniac" wasn't ready to be presented at the Cannes Film Festival or any other festival on the circuit. It's an interesting move to have the sex scenes be composites, but at least we can be sure that there will be some crazy ridiculous lovemaking in this upcoming movie.

Are you intrigued by von Trier's plan to make the sex scenes seem real? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!
