The Planking Phenomenon
Fri, 07/01/2011 - 01:18 —Carson Ingle

If you have your head plugged in at all to the tech-connected world we live in you might have come across something called ‘planking’ in the last few days. This has become the latest pastime of a nation and the world.
The glitterati have taken to it and social media is abuzz with planking, but what is it? All you need to do is lie down on your stomach, keep your limbs straight to your body to resemble a plank, and snap a picture. Planking cred is awarded for completing the activity in unusual places.
How To Hire An Honest Staff

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, approximately 75 percent of all employees steal from work in some way. What’s worse is that about 30 percent of all corporate bankruptcies are a direct result of employee theft. The National Retail Security Survey in 2009 said you can also subtract a whopping $15.9 billion each year just from retailers who suffer from employee theft. With the problem so widespread, many companies simply factor those losses into their yearly projections,…

Sat, 01/14/2012 - 00:33 —Steven Samblis

Anyone who has started a business has his or her own rules and guidelines, so I thought I would add to the memo with my own. My "rules" below aren't just for those founding the companies, but for those who are considering going to work for them, as well. 1. Don't start a company unless it's an obsession and something you love. 2. If you have an exit strategy, it's not an obsession.

In 1979, Don and Rhonda Carano purchased a single 60 acre parcel of land in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley. The parcel included a restored 1904 farmhouse, a barn and 30 acres of grapes. So began a twenty-five year mission to acquire premium vineyard properties throughout the county, because Don and Rhonda truly believed, and still do, that owning their own vineyards is the best way to ensure the highest quality grapes needed to supply their growing winery in Dry Creek Valley and their mountain winery in Alexander Valley.

You’ve seen his name on women’s feet, taking over department store shoe departments, and in malls all over the country. However, have you ever actually seen Steve Madden himself? The master behind the Steve Madden empire joined me for a brief interview just before making a guest appearance at the Dadeland Mall in Miami, FL on Saturday, December 17th. Is he what you might expect for a mogul shoe designer? Not at all. However, this brilliant businessman tells his side of the company, and honestly, his upfront take on it is quite inspiring.

Saving Water
Thu, 08/26/2010 - 06:05 —Shawn Dell Joyce

As a teen, I remember using all my strength to open a giant valve in a ditch that diverted part of the Rio Grande into my grandparents’ citrus orchards. The brown water would bubble up from the valve and flood into the orchards, following the little trenches I had made with a hoe. This method is called flood irrigation and is the least efficient way to use water. Yet 93 percent of the world’s farmers irrigate their crops using…
SUSTAINABLE LIVING - Staycations
Mon, 06/21/2010 - 08:49 —Shawn Dell Joyce
About 1.3 percent fewer Americans are expected to fly this summer than last summer, according to the Air Transport Association. Which may be good news for the environment, since a single transatlantic flight for a family of four creates more carbon emissions than that family will generate domestically for an entire year. Instead of making pricey travel plans this year that damage the environment as well as your bank account, take a local vacation, or "staycation." This is a chance…
Magic Blow Historic Lead to Celtics
Fri, 01/27/2012 - 13:47 —Carson Ingle

Just days after the Orlando Magic took a 31 point loss in Boston to the Celtics, a different game of horrors broke out at Amway Center on Thursday. The Magic blew a 27 point lead and lost 91-83. It was the biggest collapse in franchise history. Orlando (13-6) was truly a Jekyll and Hyde team on this night. They scored 58 points in the first half, but only 25 off 8-35 shooting the rest of the way. Dwight Howard was in early foul trouble and never looked right, but still led the team with 16 points and 16 rebounds.
